(CNN) -- Army experts defused a viable explosive device that was discovered Tuesday at Stormont, the legislature of Northern Ireland, according to the Police Service of Northern Ireland.
Initially flagged as a suspicious package, the device was discovered in the postal system, the PSNI said.No claim of responsibility was immediately publicized.Stormont, in Belfast, is home to the elected Northern Ireland Assembly, which was established in by the Good Friday Agreement of 1998. The agreement largely ended three decades of violence between mainly Protestant loyalists, who want Northern Ireland to remain part of the United Kingdom, and largely Roman Catholic nationalists, who want it to be reunited with the rest of Ireland -- though distrust between the sides remains./* push in config for this share instance */cnn_shareconfig.push({"id" : "cnn_sharebar2","url" : "http://www.cnn.com/2013/10/29/world/europe/northern-ireland-explosive-defused/index.html","title" : "Police: Explosive at Northern Ireland legislature defused"});
